Coursework Brief

As a media student in A levels, there's a whole course to confront in order to train and educate us with basic media knowledge.

Subject Code : 9067

There are two parts of our Examination, the Foundation Portfolio, and Media Text and Context (Textual Analysis).

The Foundation Portfolio consists of 50 marks and is finalized around February/March. The task is to film an opening scene of 2 minutes, consisting of the opening title, character introduction, establishing shot, establishing shot (location), narrative, and most importantly, creating enigma. The software we are advised to use is Adobe Premiere Pro, and we will be judged on our skills with the camera, editing, mise-en-scene, and sound, which will collectively build an opening scene.

The Textual Analysis also consists of 50 marks and is part of the CIE examinations that occur in May/June. We will be shown a short 5 minute extract of a scene from a TV show and will be asked to analyze it using micro and macro elements of filmmaking and also using technical terms that we will learn as we progress. It is a written essay exam and will be judged on our knowledge and skills in decoding and connoting the representation, camera work, editing, mise-en-scene, and sound editing of the extract.
